Bamboo Builds Future
In our new project, we combine several of our core initiatives into one holistic and sustainable approach. Education, environmental and resource protection and local value creation go hand in hand.
Our Vision
Education that grows on sustainability. Step by step, we aim to replace all furniture in our institutions with locally produced bamboo furniture. This contributes to climate protection, fair jobs, and improved learning conditions.
The State of Ghana’s Forests – A Critical Assessment
Ghana’s forests are in an alarming condition: over the past hundred years, forest cover has shrunk by around 80 percent, only one-fifth of the original forest area remains. The high demand for wood, especially for furniture and construction, accelerates the destruction of natural habitats, causes erosion, and alters the local climate. More than one-third of the country is also threatened by advancing desertification, the spread of the Sahara southward.
Only consistent protection and reforestation measures can stop the further degradation of these valuable ecosystems.
Project Background
Until now, we have had furniture for our educational facilities made from wood by local craftsmen. The disadvantage, however, was that these wooden pieces had to be replaced regularly because termite infestations rendered them unusable within a short time. In addition, wood is a very precious resource in Ghana. Healthy forests are urgently needed to counteract the ongoing desertification in the country.
Why Bamboo?
Bamboo grows up to 1 meter per day, absorbs more CO₂ than many trees, and regenerates naturally after harvesting. It replaces tropical hardwood, protects Ghana’s forests, and creates new perspectives for people and the environment.
Project Steps
The goal is to gradually replace conventional wood and eliminate its use in our projects.
- Pilot Phase: All school furniture and other interior elements will be replaced by bamboo products.
- Next Step: Window and door frames, as well as doors will be made from bamboo.
- Final Phase: Bamboo will replace all wood used in construction structures.
Project Impact
Education: Ergonomic, stable furniture creates a conducive learning environment.
Environment: Bamboo replaces tropical hardwood and protects biodiversity.
Jobs: Local artisans are trained and provided with fair employment opportunities.
