Madamfo goes Green and Clean

Project Background

Single-use plastic is widespread in Ghana. Plastic bags for shopping, plastic packaging for food, and single-use drinking sachets are part of everyday life. Waste disposal systems are inadequate and recycling is minimal. As a result, plastic ends up in the environment, clogs drainage systems, pollutes soil and water, and poses serious health risks to people.

With Madamfo goes Green and Clean, we respond to this reality with a practical, hands-on approach. We focus on everyday situations where plastic is commonly used and introduce concrete, workable alternatives that are adapted to local conditions.

Our Vision

Our vision is a community that sees environmental and health protection as a natural part of daily life.
We want to demonstrate that living with significantly less single-use plastic is possible, even without major technical or financial resources.

Green and Clean stands for:

• Responsibility towards people and the environment

• Leading by example instead of focusing on restrictions

In the long term, the initiative aims to encourage other institutions, schools, and groups to develop their own plastic-reduction approaches.

Project Steps

• Plastic-free food distribution
  We avoid using plastic bags to wrap food. Instead, we deliberately plant and use plants whose leaves have traditionally been used for wrapping food. In doing so, we actively support a return to this existing local knowledge.
• Reusable drinking water systems
  We use water dispensers with taps and reusable drinking vessels to avoid single-use drinking sachets and plastic bottles.
• Shopping without plastic bags
  We consistently refrain from using plastic bags when shopping and use our own reusable bags as a standard practice in everyday project activities.
• Awareness-raising and knowledge sharing
  We actively involve children, staff, and the wider community to raise awareness about plastic reduction and to demonstrate practical alternatives.
• Outreach and role model function
  We share our experiences with schools, groups, and institutions through visits, discussions, and joint activities.
