Background

In the community of Subinso No. 2 in the Bono Region, around 5,000 people lived without reliable access to clean drinking water. The only water source was a river about three kilometers away, and its water was not safe for consumption.

For many families, this was daily reality: long distances, heavy loads, and water that could make them sick. Women and children were especially affected, spending hours each day fetching water, time that was missing for school, work, or rest.

The consequences were clearly visible: diarrheal diseases and other water-related illnesses were common, as well as the financial burden caused by improvised transport solutions. During the dry season, the situation became even more severe.

Project Overview

Our goal was clear: to create a safe, sustainable, and accessible water supply directly within the community.

With the construction of a mechanized borehole, this foundation has now been established. Instead of unsafe water sources, the community now has a reliable supply that significantly improves daily life.

The project was developed and implemented together with the community. From the beginning, it was clear that this was not just about infrastructure, but about creating a solution that works long-term and is managed by the people themselves.

Implementation

  • The project was carried out in several clearly defined steps:
  • Selection of a suitable site
  • Drilling of the borehole to a depth of 130 meters
  • Installation of a mechanized pumping system
  • Construction of a water tank and water access points
  • Connection to the power supply
  • Testing and quality control

At the same time, sustainable structures were established:
A local water committee takes responsibility for operation and maintenance.

Impact

Today, the entire community has access to clean drinking water directly on site.

This changes a lot:

  • A significant reduction in water-related diseases
  • Relief for women and children
  • More time for education and income-generating activities
  • Improved hygiene and overall quality of life

The borehole is more than just a water source.
It is a concrete example of how targeted infrastructure can transform lives, when it is developed and implemented together.

This project shows what is possible when local ownership, on-the-ground experience and targeted support come together. And often, it is exactly this first step that makes further development possible.
