Water for the Nyameani Methodist School
Background:
Nyameani is a community with around 2,000 inhabitants in the Bosomtwe District of the Ashanti Region.
The Nyameani Methodist School, with approximately 700 students, had no access to clean drinking water. As is often the case, students had to walk long distances in the morning before classes to collect water for the day. Most of this water came from unsafe sources such as rivers, ponds, or puddles. As a result, many students arrived late or missed school altogether.
There were frequent cases of diarrhea due to contaminated water, leading to additional absenteeism. This lack of education often resulted in school dropouts and teenage pregnancies.
Although the village had a simple well, it was insufficient for the large number of people and was frequently out of service due to overuse.
Project Description:
Construction of a mechanized well with a tap and storage tank to ensure the water supply for both the students and the village community. Maintenance and hygiene training were also provided.
Status: Completed in October 2022
Cost: €7,100 – Funded by Monika and Dirk Homberg and friends
