Bettina Landgrafe, founder of the association, visited Ghana for the first time in 2001. A certified nurse, she tried to help relieve the misery around her by active work in a small bush hospital. Many locals live in great poverty without access to even the most basic necessities of life like clean drinking water.
Seeing that many relief projects were either not effective nor sustained nor did they involve the villagers concerned, Bettina decided to do more. First in Ghana, and later in Germany, she started to make plans – in cooperation with Ghanaians – to improve the situation for the poor and enable them to live free from dependence.
This is the core idea and basis for long-term development and implementation of successful projects. All groups concerned are involved in project planning: the locals as the target group of a project; the government in the person of local decision-makers like local councils or representatives of the region; and the employees of Madamfo Ghana who implement a project on site in cooperation with locals.
Bettina Landgrafe attaches much importance to transparent management of donated funds, and participation of those affected by a project.
