A Health Center for Dzilakorpe

Background:

Dzilakorpe is a remote community located in the southeastern part of an island on Lake Volta, about 22 km by boat from the nearest town, Kete Krachi. The island is home to eight communities with a population of approximately 3,300 people. Unfortunately, the region suffers from extreme poverty and a lack of basic infrastructure.
The educational situation is precarious, with no sanitary facilities, no healthcare services, no reliable drinking water supply, no road network, and no police station. Additionally, the island is difficult to access due to its isolation. The island’s economy is based on subsistence farming and fishing, which further limits the already scarce resources.
This isolated way of life means that urgently needed assistance rarely, if ever, reaches the community. Particularly alarming is the high rate of child trafficking in the region. Therefore, establishing education and healthcare facilities is crucial to improving living conditions and enabling sustainable development in the long term.

Project Goal:

To ensure medical care in Dzilakorpe, we are planning the construction of a healthcare center. This center will not only provide basic healthcare services but will also serve as a critical facility for expectant mothers and emergencies. In addition to the clinic, housing for medical personnel will be built to ensure long-term care for the community.

Planned Facilities for the Healthcare Center:

  • Examination room
  • Pharmacy
  • Delivery room
  • Maternity preparation room
  • Inpatient ward with 5 beds
  • Storage room
  • Sanitary facilities
  • Waiting room

Additional Planned Staff Accomodation:

  • Four housing units for the staff

Accompanying Measures:

  • Equipping the center with necessary medical equipment
  • Training in the areas of WaSH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) as well as maintenance to ensure the sustainability of the project

Project status:  in the planning phase
Estimated costs: approx. 130,000 Euro

With the implementation of this project, we aim not only to improve the healthcare services for the local population but also to contribute to the long-term development and strengthening of the community.
