Expansion of the Ewusiejoe CHPS Compound
Women’s Ward and Staff Accommodation to Strengthen Local Healthcare Services
Project Background
Ewusiejoe is a rural community in Ghana’s Western Region with a population of around 7,000 people. Access to medical care is very limited, particularly for women and pregnant women.
The existing Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) facility was inadequately equipped and did not include a dedicated women’s ward or accommodation for medical staff. As a result, residents often faced long travel distances, delayed treatment, and increased health risks.
Project Description
As part of the project, the Ewusiejoe Health Center is being expanded to include a women’s ward with four beds as well as two staff accommodation units.
The construction is complemented by:
- an examination room
- sanitary facilities
- medical equipment
In addition, awareness and education campaigns on antenatal care, hygiene, and family planning are being implemented.
Project Objectives
The project aims to sustainably improve healthcare services for more than 7,000 people in Ewusiejoe and surrounding communities. Key objectives include safer childbirth, a reduction in maternal mortality, improved access to medical care, and the long-term availability of qualified healthcare staff on site.
Costs
The total cost of the project amounts to approximately €35,000. The community contributes in-kind support valued at around €11,300, leaving a funding requirement of approximately €23,700 to be covered by Madamfo Ghana and its funding partners.
Status
The project is in its final implementation phase. Construction is approximately 90% complete. Current activities focus on final works to make the facility operational, including painting, electrical and sanitary installations, and room fittings. The handover of the facility is scheduled to take place shortly.
