A New Beginning for Education in Abease
Four Years Later. A Project That Has Transformed an Entire Community.
In 2022, Madamfo Ghana, together with the Reiner Meutsch Foundation FLY & HELP, completed the new Abease SDA Basic School. In addition to a modern school building, the project provided a reliable water supply, hygienic sanitation facilities and handwashing stations.
Four years later, our impact assessment clearly demonstrates the project’s lasting success. It has significantly improved learning conditions and expanded access to quality education for hundreds of children.

Project Overview
Abease is a rural community in Ghana’s Bono Region with approximately 6,300 inhabitants. Most families rely on small-scale farming for their livelihood.
Before the project, children attended classes in an open and deteriorating school building that offered little protection from rain or heat. Lessons were frequently disrupted or had to be held outdoors. There was no access to clean drinking water or hygienic sanitation facilities. Pupils had to walk about three kilometres to fetch water from a nearby stream, causing many to miss valuable learning time. Girls were particularly affected, often staying home during menstruation due to the lack of privacy and sanitation.
The Challenge
Before the project, the school faced several major challenges:
- Unsafe and deteriorating classrooms
- Lessons frequently held outdoors
- No access to clean drinking water
- No sanitation or handwashing facilities
- Poor hygiene conditions
- Long walks to collect water during the school day
- High teacher turnover
- Irregular school attendance, particularly among girls
Project Implementation
Between 2021 and early 2022, the following facilities were completed:
- Six fully equipped classrooms
- Staff room, administration office and storage room
- School furniture
- Mechanised borehole
- Eight-seat toilet block with handwashing facilities
- Hygiene education for students and teachers
The new school was officially inaugurated and handed over to the community in February 2022.
Sustainable Impact
The 2026 impact assessment highlights the remarkable long-term success of the project.
Student enrolment increased from 200 to 422, with a particularly strong rise in the number of girls attending school. At the same time, all ten teaching positions are now filled by permanent teachers, creating a more stable learning environment and improving the quality of education.
Today, clean water, modern sanitation facilities and safe classrooms provide children with an environment where they can focus on learning. Parents have regained confidence in the school, knowing that their children can study in a safe and healthy environment.
The Abease SDA Basic School has become much more than a place of learning. It now serves as an important community centre where meetings, events and local activities take place. As a result, the project not only strengthens education but also promotes social cohesion and the long-term development of the entire community.

Long-Term Development
The Abease SDA Basic School has become an important centre for education and community life. It provides children with a safe place to learn while creating lasting opportunities for future generations.
The project demonstrates how sustainable investments in education, clean water and sanitation continue to improve lives long after construction has been completed.
