A Safe Start in Life: New Equipment for the Maternity Ward in Buipe

Buipe Polyclinic is located in the Central Gonja District in Ghana’s Savannah Region and is an important healthcare facility for the local population. Its catchment area comprises around 156,900 people.

To improve healthcare for pregnant women, mothers and newborns, a new maternity ward was built at Buipe Polyclinic. Although the building had already been completed, it could not initially become operational because the necessary medical equipment was lacking.

Everything Needed for a Safe Birth

Through this project, the new maternity ward has been provided with urgently needed medical equipment. This includes delivery beds and other patient beds, delivery and suturing sets, examination lamps, baby cots and baby scales, a newborn warmer as well as oxygen and suction equipment. Wheelchairs and other essential items required for the operation of the ward have also been provided.

The procurement and delivery of the equipment have now been completed. This creates the essential conditions for the new maternity ward to provide care for pregnant women, mothers and newborns.

Better Care for Women and Newborns

The new equipment will particularly benefit the approximately 1,500 to 2,000 women in the catchment area who require medical care during pregnancy and childbirth each year.

The new maternity ward will enable better care throughout pregnancy and childbirth and expand the medical services available at Buipe Polyclinic. At the same time, the project strengthens healthcare provision in a region where access to well-equipped medical facilities remains limited.

A Sustainable Investment in Healthcare

The medical equipment will remain permanently at Buipe Polyclinic and will be used to provide healthcare for the local population. Maintenance and servicing of the equipment will be carried out within the existing healthcare structures.

With a project volume of approximately €10,000, the project creates the conditions needed for the newly built maternity ward to fulfil its purpose: providing women and their children with better medical care close to home.
