A Growing School Campus

Background

Toamfom is a community in the Ashanti Region located about one kilometer from the district capital Kuntanase, with a population of approximately 1,400 people. What began as a single school construction project has developed over the years into a connected school campus. Today, the site includes educational facilities from kindergarten through junior high school and is complemented by our tree planting project.

The Project

The starting point was the Toamfom DA Junior High School. Originally, classes were held in a temporary shelter without walls. A leaking roof, lack of protection from weather and animals, and insufficient equipment led to frequent interruptions of lessons. There was no access to clean drinking water, no sanitary facilities, and no handwashing stations. Water-related diseases were common, resulting in high absenteeism. Girls often missed school during menstruation due to the lack of a private and safe space.

With the construction of a new school building featuring three classrooms, a computer room, a staff room, and a storage room, along with a mechanized water supply and a toilet block, the situation improved sustainably.

Building on this initial project, additional school buildings were renovated and equipped. Step by step, a school campus was created that now offers reliable learning conditions for children from kindergarten through junior high school.

Summary

Through the construction and expansion of the school campus:

  • all students have access to education
  • students and teaching staff have access to clean drinking water, adequate sanitation facilities, and handwashing stations
  • water-related diseases such as cholera and dysentery are reduced
  • students are able to attend school regularly and on time, improving their academic performance
  • hygiene awareness and practices among students and teachers are significantly improved
