Why This Theatre Production?

Children are the future – and through our theatre project Gizo-Gizo! A Tale from the Zongo Lagoon, we aim to raise awareness about environmental protection among young audiences. This captivating stage adaptation of Emily Williamson’s beloved children’s book blends drama, music, dance, and storytelling to creatively convey the importance of taking care of nature.

The story follows Gizo-Gizo, a lazy and selfish spider whose reckless gold mining pollutes the lagoon. While Gizo-Gizo grows wealthier, the other animals suffer from dirty water and poisoned fish. Determined to restore their home, the turtle and the crab devise a clever plan to teach Gizo-Gizo a lesson. In the end, the spider realizes that greed has harmed everyone, and together, they work to restore the balance of nature.

Our Message: Environmental Protection Concerns Us All

Theatre is a powerful tool for change, and this production addresses a pressing issue: the devastating impact of illegal mining (Galamsey) in Ghana. Through this engaging performance, children witness firsthand how irresponsible actions destroy the environment—and how smart, collective solutions can help preserve it.

With a fusion of traditional and modern music, vibrant costumes, and stunning choreography, the magic of theatre helps children and youth develop a deeper understanding of sustainability and environmental responsibility.

We want this project to grow! Together with schools, communities, and partner organizations, we aim to establish Gizo-Gizo! as a long-term initiative under Madamfo Ghana, bringing performances to multiple locations across Ghana. To achieve this, we need support:
