Child trafficking

On Lake Volta, Eastern Region of Ghana, from the early age of childhood children are exploited as cheap labour within Lake Volta’s fishing industry. Under inhuman conditions they are enslaved to work as fishers and have no chance to get access to education. The physical and psychological hardship the children have to suffer is shocking. Disobedience is punished with physical violence.

Poverty and a lack of means to take care of all their children is what drives families into selling their children. These are the issues that have to be tackled jointly with the parents and those that buy the children – the fishermen trying to find cheap labour. That is why we started the initiative against child trafficking.
